Install Firefox OS On Windows/Mac PC [Tutorial]

By  at Saturday, November 17, 2012

We have known since a long time that Firefox will be releasing its own smartphone OS completely based on HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Originally known as “Boot to Gecko”, it was later changed to Firefox OS in July 2012 and has been the subject of much blog coverage because it is the first standalone operating system for the open web" in order to "find the gaps that keep web developers. The developers at Firefox released some screenshots of their upcoming OS in August and it looked like a cross-between Android and iOS while being based on HTML and now finally, you can give Firefox OS a try with this simulator.

Just follow the tutorial below to use Firefox OS on your PC/Mac,
  1. Download r2d2b2g simulator [Click here] (Mac, Windows, Linux versions available)
  2. Download Firefox [Click Here] (16.0.2 or later recommended)
  3. Open the .xpi file with the Firefox browser you downloaded earlier. For OS X, you can do this by simply dragging the r2d2b2g-mac.xpi file into the Firefox icon or an open browser window.
  4. It will ask you for installation. Choose “Install Now” and it will directly take you to the Firefox OS simulator.
  5. Click on the “Simulator: Stopped” button, and it will change to “Running” to open the B2G app.
That’s it, you will now be directed to the lock screen of Firefox OS. Note that this is just a test version and it is pretty buggy at the current time. We don’t yet have a release date for Firefox’s OS yet but Firefox is hinting that it will be released sometime in 2013.
