Apple’s iPhone 5 will feature a significantly thinner screen, thanks to the inclusion of ‘in-cell’ display technology,
As noted by WSJ that Apple would use a new display technology called "in-cell touch display" to ensure that the screen of the smartphone remains slimmer and more lightweight.
By using the "in- cell" technology the thickness can be reduced up to 1.4 mm. Factually, in this technology the touch panel is inglorious in the TFT LCD rather than the separate piece which will reduce the overall thickness of the next gen iPhone.
