Ever since the original iPhone was released back in 2007 and third party apps were allowed the following year, there has never been an official Gmail app for iPhone and iPod touch. Now sources indicate that Google has finally developed and submitted the official Gmail app for iPhone and iPod touch to the iTunes App Store.

It has often been debated that Apple will not allow a native Gmail app for iPhone and iPod touch in the App Store particularly because one can always sync their Gmail account with the native Mail app on iOS firmware.

Regardless of that, Apple does include several Google applications for iOS in the App Store. These include Blogger app, Google Plus, Google Goggles etc. However Google's applications for iOS are known to be full of bugs and lack good design. About this official Gmail app for iPhone and iPod touch, it is being said that Google has given special attention to the design and functionality of this app so that it is devoid of all of these problems.

According to sources, the best thing about official Gmail app for iPhone and iPod touch will be the fact that it is going to be push enabled, have priority inbox and support for starring emails by just one tap. Google Plus integration is also expected. Sources say that Google has submitted the app for approval and if Apple approves it, the official Gmail app for iPhone and iPod touch will be released quite soon.
