Downgrade 4.3.5 to 4.3.4, 4.3.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.1 - iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, 2, iPod Touch 4G, 3G [Tutorial]

By  at Monday, July 25, 2011

Update 1: If the below guide stuck with you, try to downgrade from iOS 4.3.5 to 4.3.3 without SHSH blobs - Click Here.

Today Apple has released iOS 4.3.5 for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Apple TV 2G to fix security vulnerability with certificate validation issue. Now, if you have saved SHSH blobs for iOS 4.3.4, 4.3.3, 4.3.2 or 4.3.1, you will be able to downgrade from iOS 4.3.4 to anyone of them.

Note: iPad 2 (3G models) are not supported on this tutorial as its baseband can't be downgraded so far.

Step 1: Download the required IPSW file to which you want to downgrade to, the links are given below for your convenience:
Step 2: Once you’ve downloaded the required IPSW file, its time you put your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into DFU mode. The steps are as follows:
    • Connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to your PC or Mac.
    • Turn your device off.
    • Now launch iTunes.
    • Hold down the Power button and the Home button simultaneously for 10 seconds.
    • After 10 seconds, release the Power button but don’t let go of the Home button, your computer should detect a new USB device.
    • At this point, iTunes will also recognize your device, whether its an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
At this point, your device’s screen should be off, if that’s so, then you’ve successfully put your device in DFU mode. If iTunes logo shows up, you’re in Recovery Mode, NOT DFU mode.

Step 3: Here comes the tricky and the most important part, you’re going to fool iTunes into thinking that its in contact with Apple’s servers, whereas we’re going to change that to Saurik’s server. In order to do this, follow the steps given below:

    Windows users:

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and locate the file named as “hosts”.

    Mac users:

Mac users can access the “hosts” file by navigating to “/etc/” folder, which can be found through Go > Go to Folder from within Finder.
If you’re on Windows, then open the “hosts” file in Notepad. If on a Mac, then open the “hosts” file in TextEdit, and add the following line at the end:
    74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
Refer to the screenshot below if you’re having confusion:

Just save the file and close Notepad or TextEdit, and you’re all set for the downgrade.

A quick note for Windows 7 and Vista users: Start Notepad with “Administrator privileges”, that can be done by right-clicking the Notepad app, and there you will see the “Administrator privileges” option, simply click and launch.

A quick note for Mac OS X users: While saving the host file on your Mac, you should have complete read and write privileges in order to make changes. Getting a permission error? A simple workaround is to copy the host file to your Mac’s desktop, from there make the changes in TextEdit, save the file, and copy it back to the original location, and replace the original host file with the one which you just created.

Step 4: Launch iTunes, choose your device from the left sidebar. Hold down the left “Shift” key if you’re on Windows or hold down the left “alt” key if you’re on a Mac and click on “Restore”, do not click anything else! A new window will pop up asking you for the location of the IPSW file.

Navigate to the desired firmware to which you want to downgrade to, in this case it can be either iOS 4.3.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.1, 4.3 or 4.2.1. Once you find the required IPSW file, click “Open” and let iTunes do its thing.

In a matter of few minutes, iTunes will install the version of iOS which you directed it to install. At this point you should see a progress bar on your device, everything is automated, therefore don’t do anything silly. Your device will reboot automatically when everything is done.

In some cases, iTunes will throw 1013 error, ignore it, its perfectly normal when downgrading. At this point, your device will be in Recovery Mode with your desired version of iOS fully installed.

You should see a screen like the one below:

Its quite simple to get out of Recovery Mode, simply down this nifty program called TinyUmbrella (Windows, Mac) along with Fix Recovery (Windows, Mac).

Once you’re done downloading TinyUmbrella, launch it, and then click on the “Exit Recovery” button. In a matter of seconds, your device will boot up normally.

Once you’re done with this, the last thing you’re going to do is remove the line you added to the “host” file in step 3, which is 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com in order to receive updates from Apple’s servers normally.
Now you can jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, just go to our Jailbreak Wizard - Click Here.
For iOS 4.3.4 jailbreak - Click Here.

Hi, I've followed this tutorial down to the letter... I continue to get an error "The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600)."

I have an iPad two with 4.3.3 firmware, and I have my shah blobs saved. Can you help, please?

    Anonymous said...

I'm in 4.3.4 right now on Ipad2 Wifi, but I don't have SHSH blobs for older firmware, is it possible to save the SHSH of 4.3.4 using tinyumbrella, then proceed to upgrade to 4.3.5 and follow the above tutorial?

or can I downgrade 4.3.4 to 4.3.3 directly without the saved SHSH blobs?

    Thanks

Thanks for the info. I'm very new to jailbreaking and out of habit I updated to 4.3.4 when prompted. I was using cydia but hadn't save anything. Before I try this, should I still be able to downgrade? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I was one of those who inadvertently updated to 4.3.4 and was really irritated since I had JUST performed a jailbreak on my iPad 2. When I discovered my own error I was really pissed that I missed my JB keyboard! Anyway by following your step by step instructions listed above, I was able to revert to 4.3.3 and successfully used jailbreakme.com to restore my iPad 2 to where it should be. Thank you so much!

When you face a "Recovery Mode" you have to enter the DFU Mode again before and then start using the "Fix Recovery"

The application will start fixing your iPhone , the terminal will start on your iPhone.

When finish your iPhone will start to enter the Activation screen and ready to activate via iTune.

DONT CHANGE THE HOST STUFF JUST USE THE START THE TSS IN TINY UMBRELLA AND LEAVE IT OPEN THEN DO THE RESTORE

    Anonymous said...

iTunes will not let you proceed with an IOS update or restore operation on a device without a valid SHSH blob. iTunes typical response if blobs are not valid is the dreaded message "This device isn't eligible for the requested build".
Therefore you cannot restore or downgrade to an older version of iOS without the help of blobs, and so they are very very important!

    martinezf said...

Error 3194 the I.P. address in the host file you gave is probably incorrect....

    martinezf said...

UPDATE: I bypassed error 3194 by running TSS server.. error 1600 pops up next. After doing some research i found a program that supposedly bypasses those errors on iTunes.. iPad 2 isn't supported though. I ran the program anyways and its a no-go. Out of fear of bricking the iPad I'm restoring to my original back up. This tutorial isn't entirely accurate. unless im missing something...

    Hi folks,

Had real trouble downgrading to 4.3.3 on iphone 4, but finally made it.

Ignore all the errors. Your device runs the 4.3.3 firmware by the time you get the error on itunes, the trick is to kick the device out of the DFU loop.

I was getting nowhere with the 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com string in hosts file which is supposedly due to a bug on cydia server, so what I did was I simply left the file open and erased the string in-flight (don't forget to save the file!) after itunes had made initial software checks (approx 1 min into the restore).

Kick the device out of DFU using the fixrecovery43.exe and zlib1.dll (be sure to place both in same folder on your PC/Mac).

    Good luck!

Just a tip for those trying to downgrade the iPad2 3G from 4.3.5 to 4.3.3 and having the recovery loop issue.
NOTE: Will need savel blob for 4.3.3

Download the 4.3.3 firmware and latest TU.

Connect iPad 2 to computer and load itunes.

open TU ( make sure blob is listed )
    close itunes

open hosts file and remove and entries at the bottom that has something like this - 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com and replace with 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

restart the "workstation" service on the computer.
    wait a couple of seconds.

Ping gs.apple.com and make sure 127.0.0.1 replies.

    open itunes
    start tss server on TU
in itunes hold shift key and click restore
choose the 4.3.3 firmware and of you go.

You should not get any errors.
I have just downgraded now to confirm this method works with the latest version of TU.

    Home this helps someone..

    Anonymous said...

worked for me. iPhone 4 blobs saved. updated from 4.3.3 to 4.3.5. downgraded with the terminal method on mac:

In OSX it's located at /private/etc/hosts
The best way to edit the file here is run the following from the terminal app
    sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
When it asks you for your password use the same on you use to log into the system.
Scroll to the way bottom using and paste 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Press Control O to save, hit enter, and control X to exit the editor

open iTunes and enter DFU mode, click option/restore and choose official firmware.

**Note, if you get an error the first time repeat the steps above as apples new iTunes will add a # in front of #74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com blocking Saurik’s servers. simply remove the # and control o then control x to save and try again.

After that, I just set it up as a new phone, sync, and jailbreak. Done.

For everyone who is having a problem with this downgrade, the reason is because apple fixed the patch that they use since on their error message page it explicitly states how this page downgrades. To go around this get redsnow for the tethered jailbreak and instead of checking install cydia, check start into pwned dfu mode. Then it will let you restore to a custom firmware you make from snowbreeze.

    Anonymous said...

This method will never work if no SHSH saved anywhere.
Simply run TinyUmbrella and check Log file after getting shsh.
If it no SHSH for 4.3.3 - no way to downgrade (without tethered jail stuff but it no sense to do this).

For anyone getting error 1013, this is what I did after a day of punching myself in the face. I'm on an iPhone 4 downgrading from 4.3.5 to 4.3.3. I did have shsh blobs saved in Cydia, you can grab yours using TinyUmbrella if you've jailbroken with the firmware you want to downgrade to.

    1. Followed this up until step 5: http://www.redsn0w.us/2011/09/downgrade-ios-5-beta-7-to-ios-435-or.html

    2. In place of RecBoot in step 5, I used FixRecovery in the same manner as squarebomb above. You man need the zlib libraries from here: http://forums.ngemu.com/showthread.php?t=106182 to run FixRecovery43.

    3. It actually worked, I restored from my latest backup.

As soon as you start TSS server in TU, Itune shuts down and the in the hosts file all 74.xx gets # at the start. Even if you delete #, save and restart itune, it gives you 3194 error. How to resolve this.

i just bought a new ipad2 ios 5 i have no saved ssh blobs. when is the jailbreak for this going to come out. i need it jailbroken. Help dev team

Will it delete all my apps I have installed on here? I couldn't care less, an unjailbroken phone (in it's current state anyways) is as good as dead right now, tried a supposedly 'untethered' jb from redsn0w and all it did is f*ck my device in the arse and now I can not and I repeat CAN NOT do a tethered fucking boot because it ends in 'Unexpected error (has) occured! with a blank white screen on my 3GS! >:(
Now I'm extremely pissed because not only do I have a broken Cydia, but now I'm afraid if I follow these instructions I'll not only lose all my apps, I'll f*ck my iPhone even worse and lose everything. Well, here goes nothing.
If I lose all my data on there, somebody's gonna get it.

would this steps also work for 5.0 to 4.3.3?

    Anonymous said...

U didnt mentioned SHSH Blobs AT ALL in this guide.
But u said if downgrade without SHSH, use another guide.
This guide is also not using SHSH! right?

    Anonymous said...

Not Working, either way... Uhhh. Damn Upgrades!
Is there un update to the hosts since it keeps coming back with this BS error 3194.

    FUCKING NO WORK AT ALL

So will these work on iPad2 4.3.5 without shsh blobs? Can someone knowledgeable post a direct answer, all messages and replies here very cluttered, I can't find out who answered who, and for what device. Please use quote when responding so we know to which question response is it.

    Gracias! - Swiper the Explorer
